Resumen

Terrestrial natural resources are under increasing pressure, especially in tropical countries, as the world’s population continues to grow. Agroforestry systems (AFS), in which different perennial and annual plant species are grown together on the same plot, can play an important role in sustainable development via an improved productivity and use of natural resources compared to mono-crop systems.
These systems are characterized by their great complexity and variability in terms of species composition, management systems, and agroecological and socioeconomic conditions, among other factors.
Therefore, research must be carried out in a long term and interdisciplinary manner to generate relevant results that can produce improved technologies and practices and, ultimately, generate innovations that are useful to farmers.
